A few words about Wordplay… words1

A reviewer once said of me, “Rossetti takes a sensual pleasure in words.”

It’s true. I do. I love (relish, savour, adore, glory in) words. I also have a Thesaurus. More about that in a moment.

I’m not a musician, although I would love to be. I’m not an artist, though I’d love that too. I have all the graphic smarts of a cupboard. What I am is a storyteller and words are my medium, my raw material - all that I have to paint pictures and make beautiful music in your mind. I take great care with them. I polish them and place them carefully into the right settings

Some of you are readers, some are writers, some are both. And this blog is my personal soapbox, right? So I’m going to talk about words, hopefully once a week on Wednesdays. Words you can roll around on your tongue and feel against your teeth and at the base of your spine. Sorry, was that TMI? *grin* There’ll be powerful verbs, seductive adjectives, four-square nouns, fabulous phrases. Australian slang, which is particularly salty. Also all those words that are so often misused or conflated. And because language is a living breathing thing, new words that are particularly kewl. (Also cool.)

Take and use them with my love and blessings. Share the words you particularly love. Set a challenge for the rest of us with your word suggestion.

Writers (published and unpublished), you’re welcome to share short examples of your brilliant wordplay and give us a link to the book it came from. Show off your writing chops! Just fit it to the Word du Jour.

Would you like to suggest a word or phrase or even a theme for the Wordplay treatment? Go right ahead and we’ll do it another time. I LOVE lists, like darling Mirry. *snork*

Play. Play with words.

Oh yes, about the Thesaurus. It’s the New Oxford Thesaurus of English and it’s so big it deserves a Capital Letter. I bought it not long after I’d started writing. I felt I needed all the help I could get. My Beloved refers to it as the Co-respondent, because I do a lot of writing in bed and the Thesaurus - ahem - often comes between us. It weighs 2.5 kg (5.5 lbs). By the way, My Beloved is in the word business too. He’s a pedant, but I love him. Or maybe that’s why I love him?
