You know how people quip that they’d forget their heads if they weren’t screwed on? I say that a lot. Because it’s true. I’ve always been a trifle absent-minded, but OMG - is it getting worse, or what?
Last year, My Beloved and I hid the spare car keys before we left for the USA and Canada. We can both recall the stepladder was involved, but can we remember where those damn keys are? Nope, of course not. We still haven’t found them.
A couple of days ago, I hid all my rings - that’s right, all of them, the ones I wear every day because I’m too scared to leave them at home for a burglar to find. But it’s been hot here, and very humid. Some days it’s too uncomfortable to wear rings, especially if I’m going for a healthful (hah!) walk or to the gym. So, this particular day, I decided to pop them somewhere out of sight. I remember thinking to myself that it wasn’t the most original hiding place, but at least I wasn’t making it too easy for a would-be thief.
The weekend went by. Come Monday, I reached for my rings and they weren’t in the usual place. WTF? Oh yes, I’d hidden them somewhere in the bedroom. No problem.
Do you think I could remember where?
And guess what? I was too scared to search, in case I couldn’t find them. How sad and twisted is that?
Thankfully, when I came to do the laundry, there they were - shining up at me from the bottom of the dirty clothes hamper. I still have absolutely no recollection of putting them there. None. I’m losing my marbles due to galloping senility, I swear.
Please tell me you’ve done something similar. I’m scared. *sigh*

Hi Denise,

OH YEAH, can relate big time.. And I hate the overwhelming feeling of dispair that comes when I think I may never find IT/THEM.
Almost identical situation too with the jewelry, keys and hmmmph (ca_h)
I have even told DD and DS where we have hidden stuff incease we cark it and guess what..
they can’t remember either. ” where did you say that key was?”
What a scream if we both went to the land beyond and STUFF got accidently thrown away.
MAkes you wonder though… we have all these special “treasures” but are too afraid to wear them and too afraid to have them taken from us..
SO we wear them and then walking through crowded citys I find myself covering my braclets and rings a little just incase a findger or arm goes with the gold/silver.
So I wonder sometimes what’s the use of them.
Now if you buy original ARt work. You get to enjoy it everyday of your life and believe it or not but it is an investment that RARELY goes from the Common home break ins. Always the jewelry and the money and IT stuff.
Mind you you will more than likely not reap the benefits your childrens children will.
LOVE wathching ANTIQUE ROAD SHOW.
Cheers
Mary
It has nothing to do with age - someone I worked with back when we were both under 30 was forever putting things in a “safe place” so she could find them. It was ususally important papers, and she could never find them. Never did learn that I know of! I don’t bother with the safe place, I just flat out lose them. Let us know when you find those keys as I’m wondering what safe place would be up a ladder!!!
I lost my sunglasses for four years in that very manner. Found them a couple of months ago, wrapped in thermal underwear. Bizarre.
Mary, I firmly believe that beautiful things were meant to be used. So I use them. And if they get chipped, well too bad.
Love the idea of collecting original art works. Only problem is, I have NO idea of what’s a good investment, or even what I like. I should educate myself.
Oh Jenny, don’t worry - if (should say when) we find them, I’ll be yelling it all over. I have an idea, but My Beloved swears he looked there. I suspect it could be a cases of having a ‘boy look’.
Thermal undies, Zen? You’re right that is bizarre!
And you don’t even the excuse of impending senility.
Yes, Denise! I hid my American Naturalization papers in a very safe place! Then, when I got ready to get my passport, I couldn’t find that safe secure hiding place. I had to order another one from the Naturalization office. Of course, about a month after I received the new one, I found the old one in a folder with stuff like my old year book photos. Why on earth did I put it there!!!!????
Hi Jasmine, Yep, it’s always a WTF? moment when you finally find the whatever it is. Totally weird the things you do, isn’t it? *shakes head*
Hi Denise, I have lost my marriage certificate and 3 kids birth certificates, put somewhere safe when we moved house almost 8 years ago. They’re still safe - somewhere. I bury spare house keys in the garden, you need to put them near a plant you see regularly out a window, also leaving a small garden implement nearby helps. When I was younger my memory was brilliant, but I woke up one day and realised I couldn’t remember anything, things I never even bothered to write down, like family birthdays, were gone. The day I went shopping - wearing 2 different shoes, 1 bright blue sandal with heels, the other a plastic gardening shoe, and wondering why I was limping around the shops - was the day I thought I’d better see a doctor. Apparently I was in the middle of peri-menopause which I didn’t know at the time goes for 10+ years! As I had a 1 year old at the time, I thought I was just overtired, apparently the symptoms are very similar to small child exhaustion.
We did find a set of car keys, lost for 2 years in my eldest daughter’s bedroom (it’s that long between proper cleanups) but it wasn’t very useful as we had sold the car!
Now I don’t worry too much, I tell the family to ‘write it down’ or else I don’t do it. Menopause is a great excuse for everything you don’t want to do, you can ‘forget’ all sorts of things.
Yep, Alison, hormones are officially hell. You have my every sympathy. Actually though, I do think having small children sends you nutty. I firmly believe the capacity of my brain is finite. Stuff has to fall out to make room for other stuff.
