Lousy haircuts I have known

Posted by Denise on November 23, 2009 under Animals, Humour, Life

I squibbed on the blog upgrade. What can I say? I took one look at all those truly hideous geeky instructions and I just…well, I just felt tired, all right? I can do it another day.

In the meantime, I thought we might discuss hair lice.

OMG!, I hear you scream, why hair lice? Here’s what got me thinking of them again -

Isn’t it a hoot? I laughed out loud when I saw it - which is my general gauge of blog-worthiness. It’s from  Longmire does Romance Novels. Go  have a look and a giggle.

But it took me right back too, to the - shudder - days of head lice. DD has the most beautiful hair, really thick. She’s also one of the most determined people I know and nothing would do but for her to grow it long. When she was seven, the head lice adored it so much, they set up Louse Town on her scalp. I hit the little buggers with natural remedies first. Nope. So I held our noses and tried something that smelled like undiluted DDT. Nope.

In desperation, I took her out to the back verandah with a ruler and my big sewing scissors and I cut it. Unfortunately, as a hairdresser I make a great romance writer and the back came out at the strangest angle. Gave me vertigo. So I evened it out. *snip, snip, snip*  From being halfway down her back, she ended up with a pageboy around her ears.

Poor little darling. She went into her room, took one look in the mirror and came over all weak and strange. She had to go to bed and lie down for a while to get over the shock. I felt like Delilah - and not in a good way either.

OTOH, with her hair shorter, I was able to get rid of the damn things. I guess it was poetic justice that a few of the little horrors transferred themselves to me. *shudder* I had absolutely no problem bathing in the DDT stuff. It was orange from memory. Probably accounts for a few things now.

Please don’t tell me I’m the only one….

  1. Eleni Konstantine Said,

    eeek lice!!

I remember mum pouring heaps of stuff on my head to get rid of it when I was a child and yep I had long hair too. Don’t know if she cut it…if she did, I have blocked it from my memory

    Love the cover!! Priceless.

  2. Meg Said,

Hummm….about 12 years ago I got a call from my kids stepmother a few days after I had taken all the kids, hers and mine to the movies, that they had lice. Sure enough a couple of the buggers had found me…..being a dog groomer I grabbed the flea & lice shampoo and a flea comb and deloused myself. And yes the stuff they make for dogs in the same stuff they make for people…just packaged differently.

And I love his site, been there several times it’s always good for a laugh.

  3. Dani Said,

Been there, done that. I hated every single bit of it. I remember my mother delousing my hair and torturing me with the lice comb. I was very tender headed and my hair was super thick so every time she put the comb through it hurt like hell and I let her know in short order. I know she felt bad for having to do it, but at the time I secretly thought she was enjoying my pain. I later found that lice hate Tea Tree oil, so when I was working at a daycare I’d wash my hair with it at least once a week.

I have been very lucky with my son. He’s never had head lice, but my cousin’s niece did. We had to get Rid and we also got dog shampoo too. They tried the Rid first and it worked, but she got it again (we found out why too, but that’s another story), so I believe they used the dog shampoo on her the second time and no more lice.

Those covers always crack me up. They’re brilliant!

  4. mary de Said,

  Ah Denise, what strories you tell
Talking about what fizzed our braincells…..I seem to remember turpentine or was it metho? Maybe both. Or was that used for the ticks and Fleas
LUcky Lucky through the junior years (where they seem to get the grip on kids) Neither my daughter or son got them. DS had a No 2 cut most of the time and I too kept DD hair short. (Although it sounds like my saucepan had a little more style to it than yours did  Your poor DD.
Boy! they are still rampant now too.
I always worry when I am working 1 to 1 and the little dears start scratching…

  5. fiona Said,

Denise, Where did you buy your orange headlice poison??? At the chemist shop, where some days the chemist takes a bottle home, just in case! We scratch and scratch when no-one’s looking, every time we sell a bottle of the stuff. Mary, it was kero. A straight line down the centre of the head as a preventative, or a dousing as a treatment. Not good. And Denise, Longmire is my absolute favourite website of all time. If you haven’t been over there, I suggest you head over. It’s a great giggle (especially the naughty covers) - scroll right down and follow the link.

  6. Denise Said,

Eleni, it’s the long hair that makes it so difficult, I think. I bet your mum had to cut it!

  7. Denise Said,

Meg - really? Really? It’s the same as the dog stuff? That explains why it smelled like 100% proof DDT. Erk!

  8. Denise Said,

Dani, you poor mother! I know I hated having to listen to the pained yelps - not to mentin the whining and grumbling and general moaning. Good tip on the tea-tree oil BTW.

  9. Denise Said,

Mary, my scalp felt itchy for ages after I got rid of the little horrors. There’s nothing worse than actually feeling them walking around on your head. Gives me the shudders just to think of it, even now. Yech.

  10. Denise Said,

Fi, pretty sure I got it at the chemist. Kero was it? *shudder*

And actually… you’re the reason for this post, because you sent the Longmire link. I’d forgotten about him.

  11. Jenny Said,

I remember receiving one of those chop on this hair side and then the other by my sister. It wasn’t head lice though, she was in the mood to cut hair, and I ended up with a pixie.

  12. Denise Said,

Oh Jenny, your poor mother must have had a fit!

  13. nora Said,

Omg ! I can’t forget my head lice memories I had it all the time as a kid until I’m 16 yes 16 ! Can u believe this! It was the worset experience , kids where making fun of me .. I had a long thick hair , my mom used to take me to the back yard everyday afterschool and delouses my head for 2 hours that was our daily routine then she would wash my hair with tea tree shapmo .eww u could actually see those big bugs and nits crawling in my hair ! It took me years of delousing and combing to finaly get rid of it ! Thank god :)

  14. Denise Said,

Oh Nora, how awful! So glad you finally got rid of the horrible pests. I guess every creature has its place in the great scheme of things, but I can’t imagine what purpose a head louse serves!
